En 1913, Janusz Korczak, Juif polonais et pédagogue de notoriété internationale, fonde La Maison des orphelins.
En 1939, lorsque l'Allemagne envahit la Pologne, il accompagne « ses » enfants dans le ghetto de Varsovie, refusant de fuir seul et de les abandonner. Il mène alors une lutte de chaque jour afin de leur trouver de la nourriture et de leur dispenser de l'amour et quelques instants de joie. C'est en mai 1942, quelques mois avant d'être déporté avec ses pupilles à Treblinka, où il mourra dans les chambres à gaz, qu'il entreprend la rédaction de ce Journal, témoignage bouleversant d'humanité et de dignité qui a été miraculeusement conservé. Dans l'adversité, la fièvre et l'angoisse les plus extrêmes,
Korczak y décrit l'enfer du ghetto. Il démontre en même temps quel écrivain il était, doué d'un humour cinglant et d'une plume remarquablement sensible.
